LetPay Q4 Insights: PIX Myths, Ecuador, and Key LatAm Payment Insights

As 2025 comes to a close and we can already hear the Christmas bells, the LetPay team is heading into 2026 stronger, faster, and more focused than ever. We’ve spent the year staying close to our clients—listening, sharing ideas, and growing together. We believe true partnership goes beyond processing; it’s about building smarter and more confidently.

In this Q4 edition of High risk insider, we’re sharing the key LatAm payment insights you can trust. We’ll bust the myths around the new PIX “buzz button” and put a new high-growth market on your radar.

The PIX “Buzz Button” Explained: No New Chargeback Risk

You’ve likely heard the buzz: “PIX now has a button to reverse payments… huh?”. It sounded like a chargeback earthquake, but LetPay is here to clarify: nothing has changed for merchants.

This is not a new chargeback system. Here’s what you need to know:

  • It’s an Existing Process: This button just makes it easier to start the existing MED (Mecanismo Especial de Devolução) process online, which Brazil’s Central Bank launched in 2024 and upgraded in 2025.
  • It Targets Fraud Only: The MED system is designed only for cases where the receiving account belongs to a criminal. It is not for purchase disputes or transaction errors.
  • Proof is Required: Users must still provide proof and a police report to initiate the process.

So yes, there’s a new button, but no new chargeback risk. PIX stays fast, secure, and merchant-friendly.

LatAm Payment Insights: Why Ecuador is on Your Radar

In Ecuador, you’ll be greeted with “¡Bienvenido, mi pana!”, a friendly local expression that means “Let’s do business!”. This is a market to watch.

Key Market Stats:

  • Population: ~18 million
  • Mobile Penetration: 80%
  • Dollarized Economy: This simplifies cross-border settlement significantly.

The Payment Landscape E-commerce is driven by two main categories:

  1. Local Cards: Visa and Mastercard dominate online purchases. Processing with local acquiring ensures merchants get higher approval rates and smoother transactions.
  2. Transfers & Cash: Bank transfers via Banco Guayaquil and popular cash-based networks like Western Union and Facilito are essential.
